Including accounts by twelve journalists in three continents: Africa, Asia and Latin America, the book reviews women’s status in the world today. The writers (journalists by training) describe situations facing individual women and report on field information and analysis, to examine how much still needs to change, and what women themselves are doing to change their situation. The problems that are often experienced by women across very different societies include: sexual harassment, domestic violence, legal disabilities, subordination in marriage and personal law, lack of land rights, and difficulties in employment, the absence of childcare facilities, pregnancy testing, consequent dismissal, and wage discrimination. Yet the authors make clear that in each country courageous women’s organizations persevere in using research, publicity, lobbying, and direct action to face these problems
