
WMF Hosts Fatma Qandil for a Discussion of Her Novel Aqfas Farigha in the Third Session of “WMF Talks: Autobiography Series”

The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) organized a seminar to discuss Fatma Qandil’s novel Aqfas Farigha (Empty Cages), published in 2021 by al-Kotobkhan Publishing House. The book discussion was held on Monday 23 June 2025, at the WMF headquarters in Cairo, marking the third session in the Autobiography Series of WMF Talks. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Hala Kamal in conversation with the author and Dr. Adam Talib.
Fatma Qandil is an Egyptian poetess and professor of modern literary criticism at Helwan University. She was awarded the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature in 2022 for her novel Aqfas Farigha from the American University in Cairo Press (AUC Press). The novel presents snippets from the daily life of a middle-class Egyptian family as it faces the upheavals and misfortunes of the 1960s, and witnesses the transformation of the Egyptian society, which in turn impacts the lives and orientations of its members.
