The issue of FGM was addressed in a series of conferences and meetings organized by various Christian institutions in Egypt. The third conference on the ”Coptic Family in Contemporary Egypt” included an open discussion about FGM. Moreover, the round table discussion entitled: ”Coptic Woman in Church and Society” brought forth recommendations aimed at battling this practice, both in urban and rural societies in Egypt. In addition to this, events were held including the gathering entitled ”Nurturing Young Girls” and a lecture entitled ”Traditional Practices which Affect the Health of Women and Children”. Such events aimed to analyze the historical roots of FGM and to address the physical, mental, and social consequences of this practice. The booklet at hand is based on the information gathered from the above conferences; it aims to aid leaders and parents in understanding the truth behind this inherited practice. Therefore, the study includes the stance of Christianity on FMG, the historical roots of this practice in Egypt, the psychological and mental impact of FGM on women, the relationship of FGM to purity and virginity, and the impact of FGM on sexual relationships after marriage.
