كتاب ”ربة الدار” هو دليل لتقويم سيدة المنزل. فالكاتبة ترى أنه إذا كان لمدنية الأمم مقياس تقاس به فإنما هو المرأة، والتفاوت الذي يشاهد بين الأمم يرجع إلى ربة المنزل. ولا ريب أن الأمم تتألف من عائلات ولا يستقيم أمر العائلة إلا إذا تولت شئونها مدبرة حاذقة ذات خبرة وذكاء، فتكون عيناً ساهرة على منزلها، وقلباً رحيماً يغرس في أفئدة الأطفال الغضة بذور المحبة والألفة، وملكة قوية العزم حصينة الرأي تسوس رعيتها أحسن سياسية وتنشئهم على الإخلاص وسلامة الذوق وحب العدل وحفظ النظام. ويحدد الدليل أصولاً تربوية لربة المنزل من أجل رقي العائلة ورقي الوطن ؛ حيث يهدف إلى إعداد ربة منزل فاضلة يُقتدى بها، وعاقلة يُسترشد برأيها، وعالمة تؤدب أولادها، وخبيرة لا تأخذ بالظواهر، ونشيطة لا ترى في العمل حطة، ومدبرة لا تفوتها صغيرة أو كبيرة من مصالح بيتها، ومقتصدة لا تنفق قرشاً إلا لحاجة، وأخيراً أنيسة تطرد من البيت الوحشة.The Housewife is a guidebook to instruct in the proper qualities of housewifery and house management. The writer believes that the primary measure for the development of nations is the refinement of its women. By extension, the difference between nations lies in the difference between the abilities of the mistress of the house. This is because nations are composed of families, and the only way to govern a family is to have in charge a housewife of certain abilities. A good housewife must be an intelligent and aware planner, a careful and cautious supervisor, a merciful and loving mother and a helpful hand. To instruct and guide well, she must be a queen of strength, wisdom and sound judgement, able to implement a policy of loyalty, organisation, justice and good taste in her kingdom. The book offers guidelines for various aspects of house management, outlining various requirements such as planning, learning and education, expertise and thrift, as well as qualities such as virtuosity, goodness, wisdom, warmth and friendliness.
