Egyptian Feminist Movement’s Demands
Author: هالة كمال
Category: Memory Papers
This paper presents a reading of the Egyptian feminist movement, tracking the different forms of feminist work and the demands raised by Egyptian feminists over the course of the twentieth century and the turn of the current century. This study draws upon feminist theory and history to create a map of the Egyptian feminist movement and feminist work over a period that covers more than 100 years of Egyptian history. This paper also presents a reading of the most important features of the movement, in terms of its demands, successes – as well as the challenges it faced in its social, political, local, and global contexts. The feminist movement is divided into four historical waves, highlighting the intersections and meeting points between the demands of the feminist movement, nationalism, and the struggle of Egyptian women for their social and political rights.
