The Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University in Beirut (AUB) organized a book launch and discussion of the Women and Memory Forum’s (WMF) latest publication A Legacy of Struggle and Institutional Building: From the Archive of the Egyptian Feminist Movement[1] written by Hoda Elsadda and Maissan Hassan. The event was held on Monday, 4 February 2019, and attended by Dr. Elsadda.
A Legacy of Struggle and Institutional Building documents the Egyptian feminist movement through photographs, printouts, and magazine and newspaper articles. The visual materials curated in this book are historical documents that shed light on significant aspects of history.
The book is divided into two sections to cover two main themes in the history of the women’s movement: institution building and the struggle for rights.
The first section of the book focuses on the women’s vital role in establishing the civil society institutions in Egypt, thus establishing contemporary Egypt. This section offers insight on a selected number of organizations and associations that were founded, co-founded, or lead by women. The second section addresses the various battles women fought in their struggle for their rights and freedoms, and towards justice for all, as well as the women’s struggles for social development in Egypt.
