The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) organized a public lecture entitled “A Dialogue with Christian and Muslim Scholars about Women and Gender” and delivered by Dr. Vivian Fuad, Head of the Coptic Center for Social Studies in Cairo.
The lecture was held in October 2003, and presented Dr. Fuad’s unique experience during a training course on reproductive health and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The course brought together a group of Coptic priests and Muslim imams. During the course, a discussion on gender equality and women’s rights issues transpired from the original topic of the course on women’s reproductive wellbeing. Dr. Fuad noted a common conservative gender ideology in the religious discourses of Christian and Muslim participants who used similar religious arguments to support such an ideology. Dr. Fuad noted during the WMF lecture that the actual challenges to gender equality extend beyond religion, to include primarily cultural, economic, and political concerns.
