The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) organized a cartoon exhibition titled “Sumoud Handala” [Handala’s Steadfastness] held from Tuesday 8 to Thursday 10 October 2024, at the WMF headquarters in Cairo. Through this exhibition, the WMF aimed to engage the general public with activist artworks that conveyed the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by the Israeli aggression on Gaza, particularly the suffering of Palestinian women and their journey through pain and hope.

Sumoud Handala” featured works by a number of cartoonists, including Mohammad Sabaaneh and Mahmoud Abbas from Palestine, Sara Qaed from Bahrain, Doaa al-Adl from Egypt, Osama Hagag from Jordan, Ahmed Falah from Iraq, Ahmed Rahmeh from Turkey, and the Palestinian-Jordanian cartoonist Emad Hajjaj.

The exhibition was accompanied by a documentary film featuring a series of interviews with some of the participating cartoonists conducted by the WMF member, Dr. Rania Abd al-Rahman. The interviews explored their artistic careers, and their views on the relationship between cartoon art and resistance, the significance of cartoons in the Arab world, and the way cartoons pay special attention to portraying the Palestinian prisoner and the Palestinian mother as symbols of Palestinian resilience.

The film is available in Arabic with English subtitles on the WMF’s YouTube page via this link.
