The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) in collaboration with the Association of Lebanese Women Researchers (Bahithat), and the Center of Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies at the American University of Beirut organized the Conference “Arab Women in the Twenties: Issues of Identity.” The conference was held in Beirut, Lebanon, in the period from 20 to 23 May 2001.
Recognizing the Twenties (1920-1929) as a significant juncture in the history of the Arab World and Arab modernity, the conference traces the political, economic, and social changes of this decade, and their impact on shaping women’s issues and conditions in Arab societies then and now. Women researchers and academics from various Arab countries and from the USA participated in the conference, and presented papers on a diverse array of themes relevant to women’s history in Arab countries, focusing on the path and consequences of the modernization process on discourses, writing, journalism, law, political activities, women’s movements, and social lifestyles.
