The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) organized a lecture on the contemporary trends in women’s studies, delivered by Dr. Hala Kamal, Lecturer at the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, and a WMF founding member. The lecture was held in October 2000, at the WMF headquarters in Cairo.
During the WMF lecture, Hala Kamal offered an overview on the various disciplines, specializations, schools, and theories in women’s studies, as well as the controversial issues of the field. The lecture addressed the differences between women’s studies and the feminist theory, specifically how the field of women’s studies was founded upon advocacy and the transfer and communication of knowledge, and was characterized by a pedagogical aspect. The lecture also discussed the diversity within women’s studies since it is not a monolithic entity, rather a diverse field that encompasses numerous ideas, themes, branches, schools, methods, and approaches.
