Director Gihan al-A’sar and Two Film Screenings at WMF

The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) organized screenings for the two films You Can Tell from Her Smile and The Table by the late screenwriter Nadine Shams. The screenings were accompanied by discussions with the films’ director Gihan al-A’asr.
You Can Tell from Her Smile (20 minutes) is a documentary that follows the lives of women agricultural workers in Egypt, shedding light on their everyday conditions and challenges. The Table (25 minutes) is a narrative short that traces women’s relationship with food, questioning what food means to women in the different stages of their lives, and whether food satisfies an emotional or physical need. For information about this film, visit https://rb.gy/8e2hle
About the Director:
Gihan al-A’asr completed her studies in cinema and music in 1997 before working as a screenwriter and director at multiple Egyptian and Arab TV channels. She wrote and directed her first narrative short Tuesday February 29 in 2003, for which she received international recognition. Her filmmaking career includes several documentary films, the most recent of which is Written About Love, in addition to two narrative shorts and most recently The Table. Gihan al-A’asr teaches Film Directing at the Cinema Institute, and Ra’fat al-Mihi Academy of Cinema Arts and Technology. She currently serves as the Chair of the Film Directing Department, and the Director of Zainab Foundation for Culture and Arts.
