Nadia Kamel and Ateyat al-Abnoudi at WMF for a Movie Screening of Salata Baladi

The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) organized a screening of the documentary film Salata Baladi on Sunday, 16 December 2007. The screening was followed by a discussion with Nadia Kamel, the film director, and Ateyat al-Abnoudi, the pioneer documentary filmmaker. Salata Baladi is Kamel’s first documentary, and it shows Nadia and her mother, grandma Mary, as the latter narrates the family history to her grandson Nabil. Kamel, born in Cairo 1961, commented: “while my mother told her stories, I discovered that this film may not just be about reclaiming our treasured past. We found ourselves confronted with denial and silence. Without confronting the present taboos, my mother would have been reduced to a self-indulgent state of nostalgia.”.
