The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) organized a public lecture in October 2003 entitled “The Egyptian Women’s Movement in the 1920s Italian Feminist Scene” and delivered by Lucia Sorbera. The lecture examined the mutual impact between the Egyptian Women’s Movement and its Italian counterpart, north and south of the Mediterranean, and focused on the cultural and political context of the Egyptian women’s delegation to the 9th International Women’s Suffrage Alliance Congress held in Rome 1923.
Lucia Sorbera is a PhD Candidate and Researcher at Venice University, Italy. She is working on a comparative research that explores the intersection between the women’s movements, national movements, and the state in order to reinterpret the history of the modern women’s movement in Egypt and Italy during the interwar period. Sorbera noted that Italy has recently witnessed a growing research interest in the history of the Middle East, especially feminist history, which she partly attributed to the translation efforts that made cultural productions by Arab women available in the Italian language.
