
WMF Celebrates Launching Its Latest Project “The Camera and Her: Documenting the Experiences of Women Filmmakers in Egypt”

The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) celebrated the launch of its latest project “The Camera and Her” which documents the experiences and careers of women professionals in Egypt’s film industry. The project launch was held at Zawya Cinema in Cairo on Monday 25 November 2024. “The Camera and Her” is the latest addition to the WMF Women’s Oral History Archive.
Through the Women’s Oral History Archive, the Women and Memory Forum documents the voices and roles of Egyptian women in the public sphere, and unveils their life and career experiences. The archive encompasses interviews with women from diverse backgrounds and age groups, conducted by the WMF research team over different stages and time periods.
“The Camera and Her: Documenting the Experiences of Women Filmmakers in Egypt” focuses on the experiences of Egyptian women filmmakers who performed diverse roles in the various sectors of the film industry. The participating filmmakers include: writer and director Ayten Amin, director Amal Ramses, writer and director Taghreed al-Asfouri, documentary filmmaker Tahani Rashed, film editor Dalia al-Nasser, film editor Rahma Muntasir, set designer Sherine Farghal, film editor Safaa al-Leithi, director Maggie Morgan, writer and director Mariam Naoum, director Manal Khaled, editor Mona Rabea, director Nadia Kamel, director Nadine Khan, director Nada Riyad, director Hala El-Kousi, writer, producer, and director Hala Galal, and writer, producer, and director Hala Khalil.
The project launch featured a series of short films on the interviews conducted with the participants as they share key milestones in their artistic careers. The film series is available in Arabic with English subtitles on the WMF’s YouTube page via this link.
