The Women and Memory Forum (WMF) organized a screening of the Egyptian documentary film The Memoirs of M.A. Draz (Rasael al-Sheikh Draz) on Wednesday 4 December 2024, at the WMF headquarters in Cairo. The screening was followed by an open discussion with the film’s director, Maggie Morgan, marking the third episode of the WMF Film Club “Women’s Tales.”
“Women’ Tales” engages with women’s issues in Arab cinema by hosting monthly screenings of selected films on the first Wednesday of each month. The screenings are free and open to the public, and feature the women filmmakers for an open discussion with them.
The Memoirs of M.A. Draz follows Noha al-Khouli’s journey as she discovers the archive of her great-grandfather, the prominent Azhar scholar Sheikh Mohamed Abd-Allah Daraz, decades after his death. In his archive, she finds a rich collection of letters, memoirs, and personal photographs that narrate the story of his life.
Maggie Morgan is one of the participants interviewed for the WMF project “The Camera and Her,” launched in November 2024 to document the experiences of Egyptian women filmmakers in the WMF Women’s Oral History Archive.
