The names of dozens of female singers who helped shape the musical landscape of Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon during the first half of the 20th century remain largely absent from cultural memory, despite the profound mark they left on the history of Arabic song. This forgotten legacy was the focus of the evening, Forgotten Female Singers of the First Half of the 20th Century, organized by the Women and Memory Forum last May. The event featured Egyptian-Lebanese artist Mervat El-Gesry, accompanied by Magid Suleiman on the oud and Nevin Nabil on the riqq.
